Coordinating Archaeologist at Vrak - Museum of Wrecks
The National Museums of Maritime, Transport and Defence History work with cultural heritage with the vision of broadening people's worldview through knowledge, experiences, and engagement.
The authority has a well-integrated sustainability effort and also aims to inspire others to act for a sustainable future. We are a museum authority that operates and develops the Marine Museum, the Maritime Museum, the Vasa Museum, Vrak - Museum of Wrecks, and the Railway Museum. From January 1, 2026, the Defence Historical Museums, the Army Museum and the Air Force Museum, will also become part of the authority. The authority will employ around 390 staff.
We have exciting development work ahead of us as the authority grows in 2026. We will continue to develop a culture and working methods where people and ideas have space to grow while building a shared culture with common working methods in a new organizational structure within a larger authority. We are developing an effective collaborative culture characterized by trust, curiosity, and responsibility. A culture where we get better together!
About the Position
A long-term effort to develop SMTM's maritime archaeological activities has begun, and from the turn of the year, it will therefore become part of Vrak - Museum of Wrecks. As the coordinating archaeologist, you will lead the development work together with the museum director and support the strategic work related to the archaeology area. In this role, you are responsible for formulating and driving archaeological development projects, including preparing project applications. You coordinate the museum's archaeological assignments and projects and lead the archaeological group. Together, you plan the authority's archaeological activities. You ensure quality in all steps of the contract archaeology process - from investigation plans and agreements to reporting, invoicing, and follow-up. You participate in quarterly follow-ups and have knowledge of the financial conditions that apply to the contract archaeology activities. If necessary, you also participate operationally in fieldwork and report writing. If you have a professional diving certificate, diving archaeology may become part of the position. Vrak's maritime archaeologists operate throughout the country, which means that travel is included in the work.
Vrak gathers a large part of Sweden's maritime archaeological expertise. The activities primarily focus on shipwrecks and other underwater remains but also include archaeology on land in maritime environments. With us, you will work broadly and have many points of contact - internally and externally, nationally and internationally. In this role, you play an active part in further developing the authority's archaeological activities together with the archaeological group and the research coordinator. As a coordinating archaeologist, you will also work strategically with archaeological issues within one of the country's largest state museum authorities.
Your Competence and Experience
You have an academic degree in archaeology and/or maritime-oriented archaeology and extensive experience in contract archaeological activities. You have good knowledge of the Cultural Heritage Act, the Swedish National Heritage Board's regulations, and the contract archaeology system. You have a good ability to express yourself in Swedish and English, both orally and in writing, and good knowledge of digital documentation technology. We expect you to have a broad and well-developed network within the archaeological world.
We consider it meritorious if you have:
- experience in leading and coordinating the daily work of work or project groups
- experience in strategic development work
- experience in case handling within cultural heritage management
- experience in leading archaeological investigations
- experience in underwater archaeology, investigations on land in maritime environments
- are a PhD researcher
- professional diving certificate, professional diving leader certificate, and/or ship officer class VIII or higher
- driver's license B
Your Personal Qualities
We will place great emphasis on your personal qualities. You have an easy time communicating and collaborating and approach your colleagues with a pedagogical and supportive attitude. You thrive both in working independently and in a group, actively contributing to a good collaborative climate that strengthens the group's dynamics. You are outgoing, with a natural ability to create, maintain, and nurture professional relationships - both within the authority and externally. Your working style is structured and meticulous, and you easily create an overview, prioritize, and support colleagues in driving the work forward. As a person, you are attentive and have a positive attitude, which allows you to quickly build trust with others. You enjoy leading and motivating and have a good ability to plan, drive, and execute tasks towards set goals.
